The key to handling conflict is to deal with it head-on. It's natural to want to avoid difficult conversations, but doing so only prolongs the agony and creates resentment.

Here are four things you must do to prepare for a productive conversation:

1. Get your motives right. Under stress, our motives become short-term and selfish. Focus on the bigger picture and what's best for everyone involved.

2. Get your emotions right. Unhelpful emotions can hinder a productive conversation. Before starting the conversation, take a moment to reflect on your emotions and the story you're telling yourself.

3. Gather the facts. Don't start the conversation by sharing your conclusion. Share the facts and premises that led you to your conclusion. Gathering the facts is required homework for a healthy conversation.

4. Get curious. The most important attitude to bring to a crucial conversation is a blend of confidence and curiosity. Be confident in your position but also open to any facts or logic that might improve your conclusion. Remember, curiosity makes you more persuasive.

By following these steps, you can improve the odds of a successful conversation and effectively handle conflict.
